Donald R. May, MD, FACS

Donald R. May was born in Illinois.  He was raised on his family’s ancestral farm, which he and his wife Jane still operate.
 
Dr. May’s early undergraduate major was in nuclear physics and his subsequent major and early graduate studies were in immunological chemistry.  He received a BS in Microbiology from the University of Illinois, Champaign, and his MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago.  He was an intern at the Northwestern University Memorial Hospitals.  He completed his residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in retina surgery, both at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary.
 
He was a Major in the United States Air Force and was on active duty at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio.  He founded and directed the USAF Retina/Vitreous/Ocular Trauma Service.  He received the Air Force Commendation Medal.
 
Dr. May has been on the faculties of the University of Illinois, the University of Texas, the University of California, Tulane University, and the Texas Tech Health Sciences University.
 
He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Charity Hospital of New Orleans and a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Tulane University.  He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and subsequently Associate Dean at the Texas Tech Health Sciences University School of Medicine.  He was a full professor in the Department of Health Organization Management and taught MBA students in a joint program with the College of Business Administration.
 
Dr. May was invited as the first foreigner to perform modern vitreoretinal surgery in the People’s Republic of China.  He returned to China three additional times to teach vitreoretinal and ocular trauma surgery.  He has taught vitreoretinal and ocular trauma surgery throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, China, India, and Western Europe.  Dr. May served for 25 years as a member of the Board of Directors of the World Eye Foundation.
 
He has served in administrative capacities and on the boards of organizations from the local to the international level, including two years as President of the United States Eye Injury Registry, and has authored more than 100 scientific publications and has given more than 200 scientific presentations at national and international meetings.  Dr. May is a member of the Lubbock Board of Health.
 
Dr. May is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is a member of numerous professional societies including The Retina Society, The Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, and the American Farm Bureau Federation.
 
Dr. May serves on the Board of the Lubbock International Cultural Center, Inc.  He is a member of The Greater Lubbock Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and the American Legion Post # 575.  He is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.  He is a member of The Rotary Club of Lubbock and a Paul Harris Fellow.
 
Dr. May was the first place delegate for the Texas 19th Congressional District to both the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota and the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
 
Dr. May wrote and published more than 2,200 separate political columns and commentaries over the past 10 years and has spoken at numerous political gatherings and events.  He wrote 2,150 consecutive Conservative political columns that appeared in his daily “Mr. Conservative” blog over six years.  He debated issues relating to the United States Constitution in the “It’s Debatable” series, which appeared every other week on the Sunday op-ed page of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
 
Dr. May is a candidate for the United States House of Representatives from the Texas 19th District.
